It is a 16–amino acid peptide that functions as a signaling molecule involved in the regulation of cellular metabolism and stress responses. MOTS-c acts as a mitochondrial retrograde signaling factor, enabling communication from mitochondria to the nucleus to coordinate metabolic adaptation.
